The greatest untapped resource in health care is the patient, but we need patient accountability to tap it in a more meaningful way. The time has come for people to ask more of themselves in managing their health. In the new age of accountable care, it is time for the patient to be accountable, too.
What should patients be accountable for? Each of us should be accountable only for what we have the skills and opportunity to do well—nothing more.
