Healthwise® Mission Points
Healthwise reaches
one billion
mission points!

Since 1975, our Healthwise Mission has remained constant:
"To help people make better health decisions."
At 3:07 p.m. on June 8, 2011, for the one billionth time,
someone turned to Healthwise information for help.
And today, mission points are still adding up.

We could not have done this without our partners and their patients, their health
plan members, and their website users. So to all of you, we say:

Thanks a Billion!

We hope you will share in the celebration with us!

Best of health,

Don Kemper, Founder and CEO

Wow...who knew all those years ago we would use the word "billion". I am one of the many individuals who have benefited from sound unbiased information to help me make a good decision. Personal thanks! Professionally one of the bat decisions you made was to open up the encyclopedia to all visitors to the Kaiser web site. It definitely helped both organizations to extend our mission to thousands and thousands more people, whether or not they have health insurance. What good company!!!

Colleen Yoo, Keas
Congratulations on reaching this impressive milestone!

Dexanne Clohan, HealthSouth
So nice to see an "odometer" that tracks something getting used instead of getting "used up". Congrats on growing, getting stronger, and serving so many!

Recipe for Healthwise Decisions
1. Start with a hearty and hardy band of pioneering health educators.
2. Combine 200 happy employees and millions of opportunities to improve health care decisions.
3. Mix together with a state-of-the-art electronic technology and interactive media.
4. Spice it up with 33 million self-care guides, 150 interactive decision aids, virtual coaching, white papers, and a best-of-breed 40,000 page online health encyclopedia.
5. Leaven with a passion for wellness, a commitment to environmental stewardship, trusted community and health care partnerships, and a lasting social mission.
6. Gently remove all preachy, jargony, self-righteous and judgmental flavors that might sour the dish.
7. Bake for 36 years in a not-for-profit oven (healthcare should not be served partially-baked) and baste frequently with a secret sauce*
8. Garnish with a garland of stellar awards: Top Small Workplaces Award (Wall Street Journal), Innovative Company of the Year (Idaho Innovations), American Academy of Family Physicians and Consumer Health World Award, NCQA HIP certification, first ever URAC web accreditation, National Grand ClearMark Award (The Center for Plain Language), Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award (The American Psychological Association), and more.
9. Serve piping hot over a billion times.

What do you get?
Delicious, nutritious Healthwise
“You bet! It’s all good!”

* There is considerable speculation as to the ingredients in the secret sauce. Some think it is the Idaho potato or the Boise air, while others claim it’s somehow related to “The Donald” or the Idaho political environment. Personally, I feel it is Healthwise’s best kempered secret that should not be jimmied or mettlered with.

Submitted to honor and celebrate the billionth Healthwise Mission Points on June 8, 2011. We have been very pleased to partner with you for nearly 20 years on our shared mission and passions.

Through more than a decade of professional and institutional interaction we have seen the Healthwise tools and information help patients and their families undersatnd the care that they are undergoing or may require. Empowering the patient (health care consumer) in the process of their own care is essential to catalyze a health system towards excellence. Congratulations to Healthwise for impacting the BILLION individuals who have been touched by your dedication to health information and tools. Peter J Plantes, MD

Dede Ryan, The Cabin
Congratulations! Healthwise provides a terrific service that has saved and improved lives. If you add in the number of us who also reference your print information, you are probably at two billion! Thanks.

Charles Brown, V.A. GAINESVILLE FL
Thanks a billion Healthwise for the info you have given me to make my life healthier. From Charles.

Roger Hymas, Just himself today.
Congratulations to Don, Molly,(Michelle, of course) and all friends at Healthwise. What an extraordinary journey it's been. I guess I've known you for about half of your experience and been in awe of the way you have continuously adapted to all that society and technology have chucked at you. On a personal level, I've seen how your information can directly affect care and save lives. I doubt my son, aged 35 then, four years ago, would have survived if he hadn't checked out the symptoms at two of your client sites and then taken his imminent stroke in such a timely way to the nearest ER. So thanks a billion for that. Have a fantastic day Roger

WOW....what an amazing accomplishment by a team of the brightest and best people in healthcare today!

Jan Anderson, SHPS, Inc.
It doesn't surprise me in the least the Healthwise is approaching such an astounding milestone. I've personally been aware of the organization's stellar content since 1993, when I joined what was then EMC. We used the Healthwise Handbook as our triage resource at that time. Fast-forward to 2010, when Healthwise became the content vendor for Carewise Health’s updated portal, because of the breadth and depth of information and formats. Working with Healthwise always feels collaborative and inclusive. Ideas and questions are welcomed with enthusiasm and answers are quickly given. Congratulations not only at reaching a billion, but on your forward-facing, innovative solutions for consumer health.

Gale Wilson-Steele, Health Media Syndicate
Kudos on a mission that continues to endure through over 35 years of healthcare changes in policy, practice and communications platforms...THAT'S a solid mission!

Shaun Priest, MEDSEEK
Congratulations!!!

Aaron Graham, Medical Mutual
It's a great organization to work with for health content. Healthwise always is helpful (Shelly Halling is great). Congratulation on this.

About Mission Points

What is the Healthwise Mission?
The Healthwise mission is to help people make better health decisions.
What is a Mission Point?
Each time someone uses Healthwise information to make a decision or take action, it results in one mission point. A mission point is counted when:
  • A mother’s worst fear is confirmed
  • A father decides that time—not back surgery—will ease his pain.
  • A grandmother says goodbye at home, surrounded by her family and friends.
How do we count mission points?
Our clients and partners provide us with information on how often our information is used. Each time a nurse uses our information to help a caller, a consumer accesses a website, a doctor gives a written instruction to a patient, or a person gets a self-care guide, a point of health is added.
How did we get here?
It all started in 1975, when Don Kemper established Healthwise as an independent, nonprofit organization with a mission of helping people make better health decisions.

We began with the Healthwise® Handbook. Today more than 30 million copies are in print.

Then, with the availability of the Internet, came our online health encyclopedia, the Healthwise® Knowledgebase. It continues to be the primary source of Web-based consumer health information.

Our third major contribution was Information Therapy (Ix®), which clinicians use every day to provide thousands of information prescriptions to their patients.

And, on June 8, 2011, all this will add up to one billion mission points.

The Four Eras of Healthwise Innovation:
  • 1975 to 1994: Self-Care and Wellness Handbooks and Workshops
We first published the Healthwise Handbook with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the National Center for Health Services Research. Since then, in partnership with our clients, we have distributed more than 30 million copies of our self-care guides.
  • 1995 to 2002: Consumer Health Websites
In 1996, when the Internet became widely available, Healthwise launched the online Healthwise Knowledgebase. The Healthwise Knowledgebase—with one hundred times more information than the handbook—quickly became the primary source of Web-based consumer health information and call center support.
  • 2002 to 2011: Information Prescriptions from Your Doctor
In 2002, Healthwise pioneered the concept of Information Therapy (Ix), the timely prescription of evidence-based health information. Every day, thousands of patients get information prescriptions from their care team to help them make better health decisions.
  • 2012 and Beyond: Virtual Visits, Incentives, and Patient Response
The next phase of the Healthwise journey will focus on extending the care team reach to support engaged, activated, and informed medical consumers. We hope you will join us.
What are some examples of what people see when they contribute to a point?
